Here the alchemical elements from Sublimatio are fermented and enriched. Mortificatio is the fifth of seven paintings that signify the seven exhibit halls in the museum. Each one a step in the process of alchemy.The flasks represent science, but the beautiful light refractions and shadows epitomize the mysteries of the soul. Mortificatio means death but also rebirth from fermentation. Here the hanged flask casts its glowing shadow below signifying rebirth.
